On Saturday, March 7, 2015, CCCEOPSA President Fabio Gonzalez attended the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) meeting in Sacramento, CA. He was joined by two former San Jose City College Student Leaders who had previously participated in the SSCCC as senators/officers and were also former EOPS students.
The three were there to elicit support for AB 490–the Assembly Bill introduced by Assembly Members Alejo and Gatto to restore funding to the EOPS program. They gave a short presentation and then answered “a lot of great questions” from the participants. In the end, the SSCCC decided to pass a motion to support AB 490 and send representatives to testify on its behalf.
At one point during the presentation, one of the students asked the gathered senators how many of them are or were EOPS students to which half of the group responded by raising their hands. President Gonzalez described the moment as “amazing” and reported that Dr. Denise Noldon, newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Student Services for the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, who was also in attendance, seemed to be impressed.
President Gonzalez summed up the experience as “[a] good day.”
